Hello Kitty Breakfast

Hello Kitty has become so popular with little girls lately, and mine are no exception.  We have Hello Kitty pajamas, Hello Kitty purses, Hello Kitty shoes, and even Hello Kitty backpacks.  We also love to celebrate Hello Kitty by making cute snacks.  In the past we’ve made Hello Kitty Sandwich and a Hello Kitty Bagel.  Make sure to  check them out!

Today, we would like to show you our Hello Kitty Breakfast – Hello Kitty Oatmeal

Hello Kitty Breakfast

Creative Kid Snacks: Hello Kitty Breakfast

Ingredients:

1/2 – 3/4 cup cooked oatmeal – (we use instant)

2 fresh strawberries

2 slices banana

2 chocolate chips

Directions:

Arrange your prepared oatmeal on a plate in an oval shape.  Next, slice two ears from a round banana slice by creating a tip like a triangle on each one.  Lay the ears atop the oatmeal at the top corners of the oval you have made.  Next, find a small banana slice and place 3/4 of the way down the oval of oatmeal to be Hello Kitty’s nose.  To make her bow, slice a strawberry in half, then place the tips of the two triangles together to look like a bow.  Slice the bottom tip off of your other strawberry and place in the center of the bow to look like the knot.  Use the remaining strawberry to slice thin whiskers for Hello Kitty.  Place along the sides of the face.  Finally, add two little eyes using chocolate chips.

This breakfast is sure to please any Hello Kitty Fan!

Oatmeal is a great choice for breakfast for the kids.  It is filling, full of fiber, and even protein.  Read this article to learn more about all of the health benefits of oatmeal.  Strawberries add a punch of vitamin C and antioxidants, and bananas are a rich source of potassium.

A Whale of a Breakfast: Moby Dick

The other day we were feeling creative at breakfast time, and, since we were having oatmeal that morning, we decided to make a friendly whale!

We love to do sea and ocean inspired food, like our “Under the sea“, “Finding Nemo“, “Tropical island“, “A day at the beach“, and “Jonah” snacks.

Creative Kid Snacks: Whale of a Breakfast

Ingredients:

3/4 cup instant oatmeal (plain) cooked according to directions

1 raisin

1 small section of banana

1 small section of strawberry (or cherry, red grape)

Directions:

Spread cooked oatmeal onto plate in the shape of a whale as shown.  Next, thinly slice a small section of banana, and place above whale to look like a spout.  Add a raisin for an eye, and a small bit of strawberry for a happy little smile.

We just finished reading a children’s version of Moby Dick.  I read the chapters aloud each night to Grace (my now 5 year old).  I discovered an awesome collection of a bunch of classics in adapted versions perfect for reading aloud.  Since it was a used book store, I snatched up a ton of different books, including Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Secret Garden, Little Women, and more.  It has been so fun for us to read these chapters aloud each night, and introduce the classic literature at a young age!

I suppose that, in honor of our recent read, we should name this breakfast “Moby Dick”.

Under the Sea

“Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid is one of our all-time favorite movie songs.  It just gets stuck in our head every time we listen to it!

We’ve been in a bit of a whirlwind in life lately, so Sunday night we decided to veg and have a family movie night.  Our movie of choice was The Little Mermaid.

Today’s snack is inspired by Sebastain’s famous song “Under the Sea”.

Create these fun little sea creatures using the following ingredients:

1/2 cup cooked oatmeal

1/4 avocado, sliced

1 strawberry

1/2 slick string cheese

3 grapes

goldfish crackers

1 teaspoon yogurt

Assemble:

Spoon your oatmeal onto the bottom of the plate for the ocean floor.

Next, arrange your avocado slices to look like a beautiful ocean plant.

Slice your strawberry in half so it lies flat on the plate and slice again into 6-8 thin strips to use as the crab’s arms and legs.

Slice 1/2 of your string cheese from the bottom into several small sections.  I think this little guy looks like one of Nemo’s little classmates.  (Now we are cross-referencing Disney movies!).

Slice grapes in half to lay flat onto the plate, and create little tails by slicing remaining portion of grape in half.

Add goldfish crackers.

**Optional: add little eyes to some of the creatures using a food marker

You are now ready to draw your waves at the top of the plate to complete the “Under the Sea” look.  I love to use the following technique:

Heart Warming Oatmeal

Do your kids love oatmeal as much as mine do?  Fresh berry oatmeal or oatmeal with fruit preserves is even better, right?  Make a Valentines Day breakfast for your kids that they will love to eat!

Oatmeal is one of the best breakfasts for kids.  It keeps them full and has more protein than other grain-based breakfasts.  It’s something to feel good about feeding the kids.  What’s better, if you top it with some organic berry preserves (such as Costco brand), the kids will love you forever!

Heart Oatmeal 1

Step 1: Prepare Oatmeal and Strawberries

Cook oatmeal as directed and place into a bowl.

To create heart strawberries, slice strawberries in half from top to bottom so they lay flat.  Then, carefully slice a small “V” into the top center to look like a heart.  Use the little fruit hearts as a garnish to your dish.

Step 2: Create Jam Heart

Place several tablespoons of berry preserves into a microwavable container – preferably one from which you can pour later!  Microwave for 30 seconds.

Next, use a small heart shaped cookie cutter to help you make your heart.  Press the cookie cutter slightly into the oatmeal, then pour in your warm preserves, filling the shape.

Step 3: Remove cookie cutter and serve

Carefully pull your cookie cutter straight up from the oatmeal – leaving your beautiful heart-shaped jam in the center.

Congratulations!  You have now created a Valentines day breakfast full of flavor that the kids will love!

Snail

I love the idea of using bright, colorful fruit to recreate some of the beautiful scenes we see in nature.  Although snail shells are not known to be this bright, the two colors I used contrast themselves to show the beautiful pattern that these shells naturally have.
Slice a banana in half lengthwise to make the snail’s body.  Place a ground of oatmeal beneath him.
Add a raisin eye and a sliced blueberry for a mouth.  Use a tiny bit of the other half of the banana for some antennae.
For the shell, use contrasting fruits like raspberries and grapes to form a swirly shell look as shown above.

Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is one of Disney’s most beloved characters of all time.  We love Disney in our house.  We’ve made Winnie the Pooh, Mike Wazowski, the house from the film “Up”, and today we are making Mickey Mouse!
This Mickey was the perfect breakfast.  Oatmeal, raisins, and yogurt are the perfect combination!
(By the way, is photo 1 or photo 2 better?)
Make a semi-circular shape on the plate with your oatmeal.  Next, add Mickey’s ears with the raisins.  Use the plastic bag method shown below to easily draw two oval eyes and the mouth.
Draw the mouth, then add a small piece of watermelon to look like his tongue.
That’s it!
Now, I have one daughter who likes raisins, and one who doesn’t.  Grace, the oldest, wanted a Mickey but did not want raisins.  For her, a threw some raisins into some white bowls for the presentation, then left her with just the face to eat.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We all love the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  
Take a morning and read the story with your child, then talk about all the foods the caterpillar ate, and perhaps talk about which of the foods he ate were nutritious and which were not. 
Then, create him yourself!  Take a large strawberry and slice to create his head.  Next, create his eyes by using little bits of pineapple cut into circles and place sliced green jelly belly candies in front.  Form his body with green grapes , carrot feet, raisin mouth, and ham antennae.  He is walking on an oatmeal ground and taking in the cheddar cheese sun!

Tropical Island

This tropical island getaway is created by using oatmeal for the land/sand, yogurt for the waves, a graham cracker tree trunk, sugar snap peas for leaves, and colby jack cheese for a sun.
Makes me want a vacation!
