Ballerina

September 30, 2013 by Amy Hudson

I have two little ballerinas in the house.  Grace has taken ballet and tap classes for a couple years, and dance has been one of her favorite things to do outside of school.  The recitals, where she gets to wear her costume, complete with poufy tutu, ballerina bun, and makeup – then ending with her getting a bunch of flowers and applause, are the highlight for her.  When recital time came around this last spring, we decided to make a little snack to celebrate it.

Creative Kid Snacks: Ballerina

Ingredients:

1 slice colby jack cheese

1 slice deli ham

1-2 cubes of watermelon

yellow bell pepper

1 dried blueberry

red grape

Directions:

Slice a piece of colby jack cheese into the shape of a ballerina’s head, arms, and torso.  We put the arms in the air as the ballerina twirled on her toes.  Next, lay a thin slice of watermelon cut to the shape of a top onto the ballerina’s chest area.  Add the two legs made from two thin slices of cheese, then lay the deli ham over top to look like a cute tutu.  Add two little toe shoes using bits of watermelon, a hair bun and top of yellow bell pepper, and a watermelon bow.  Slice a dried blueberry in half for her eyes, and add a thinly sliced red grape for her mouth.  So sweet!

Ladybug Dessert

August 23, 2012 by Amy Hudson

I’ve been needing to add more deserts here, so it’s time for you to meet the little ladybug!
Slice a watermelon into a circle shape about 6 inches across.  You could make it smaller if you wanted.  Slice a small section out of the middle starting the cut from the back and slicing almost all the way through but not completely.

Next, add brown peanut or pretzel M&M’s for her spots.
Slice a piece of toast into a “D” shape as shown and spread with Nutella.
Add two cheerio eyes, and your ladybug dessert is complete!
My little girl LOVED this one (although, she loves all the desserts)!

Mickey Mouse

August 16, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Mickey Mouse is one of Disney’s most beloved characters of all time.  We love Disney in our house.  We’ve made Winnie the Pooh, Mike Wazowski, the house from the film “Up”, and today we are making Mickey Mouse!
This Mickey was the perfect breakfast.  Oatmeal, raisins, and yogurt are the perfect combination!
(By the way, is photo 1 or photo 2 better?)
Make a semi-circular shape on the plate with your oatmeal.  Next, add Mickey’s ears with the raisins.  Use the plastic bag method shown below to easily draw two oval eyes and the mouth.
Draw the mouth, then add a small piece of watermelon to look like his tongue.
That’s it!
Now, I have one daughter who likes raisins, and one who doesn’t.  Grace, the oldest, wanted a Mickey but did not want raisins.  For her, a threw some raisins into some white bowls for the presentation, then left her with just the face to eat.

Graduation Day

July 3, 2012 by Amy Hudson

For my daughter Grace’s preschool graduation day lunch, I used toast with blackberry jam to make a graduation cap.  A piece of string cheese cut in half lengthwise became the tassels and the diploma.  Diploma is tied with a slice of green onion (which Grace of course did not eat).  Watermelon on the side completed this lunch.
