One of our Facebook friends, Amber, asked for some cute food ideas for her son’s upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles birthday party. I hadn’t realized that the beloved Ninjas had made a comeback and have lately become popular for the kids!

Following are some ideas for this Cowabunga-mazing party!

1) Serve PIZZA

You have to have the turtles’ favorite dish as one of your main courses!

2) Donny’s drink

Super easy to make and more festive than regular drinks, these turtle beverages are sure to get a comment or two from your guests. There’s even a cute little tie in the back. The best part? You can write the kids’ names on the construction paper mask once they are handed out!

3) Ninja Turtle Party Apples

These guys would be adorable to either serve along with all of the party food, or even to wrap up in cellophane and send home as little favors. See how they are made HERE.

4) Leonardo’s Sword

Option 1: plain celery

Option 2: peanut butter swords

I found these tiny skewers at the dollar store. Slice celery, making some small and some long pieces. Slide a small piece horizontally down the skewer. Next, slide the long piece on vertically. They hold up and look just like a little sword!

5) Donatello’s Bo

Pretzel rods look just like Donatello’s bo.

If you wanted to jazz these up a bit, you could buy some peel-able Twizzlers and wrap some around the middle for the grip.

6) Turtle Shell cake (or Rice Krispy) pops

A friend of mine got the above cake pan on amazon and made adorable cake-sickles for her girl’s birthday. We’ve all seen the round cake pops that look like a ball, but I had never seen one like this.

For the TMNT party, make cake, rice krispy treats, brownies, or cookies in the pan and frost with buttercream frosting to look like a turtle shell. Use brown and green and make something like the following pattern:

Spread the brown frosting all over the surface first, then pipe the green frosting on in this pattern. Practice on a piece of wax paper first. You can even add some green or chocolate sprinkles over the top for some texture!

I am working on a post full of ideas for one of Creative Kid Snacks’ Facebook fans, Amber. She asked me for some ideas on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles birthday party.

I have a bunch of ideas to share for this upcoming party, but I couldn’t wait to share this one with all of you! I remember watching the Ninja Turtles when I was growing up; and they have come back and have become quite popular on Nickelodeon.

What we are making today are a healthy version of caramel apples. Green apples piped with white and dark chocolate, chilled, then enjoyed.

Creating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Apples

Start by melting approximately 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips. (This will be for only the whites of the eyes, more white chips will be melted later to create the colored chocolate). I added a 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable oil just to make sure the resulting consistency would be smooth enough to pipe onto the apples. Melt the chocolate by microwaving it for one minute, stirring at 20 second intervals. Total melt time for this amount of chocolate will be between 45 seconds and 1 minute.

Once the white chocolate is ready, spoon into a piping bag or a plastic zip bag with a tiny corner snipped off and pipe little ovals onto each apple. Chill in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.

Next, microwave 1 1/2 – 2 cups of white chocolate chips, depending on how many apples you want to make. Add 1-2 teaspoons of vegetable oil. Microwave for approximately one minute, stirring at 20 second intervals.

Divide the melted chocolate into 4 small bowls (or as many bowls as you want colors of headbands). To make it easier on yourself you could choose one turtle to make and color all of the chocolate that color.

Add food coloring to the chocolate. I use the Wilton gel food coloring. The colors are very true. Again, make as few or as many colors as you like, depending upon how ambitious you are.

Once your colored chocolate is ready, spoon it into a piping bag (I suggest a simple zip bag with a tiny corner sliced off if you are making all four colors, because washing out a piping bag and attachment between every color will be a lot of work).

Pipe around the whites of the eyes you’ve already created. You will make a figure eight around them. Then, continue the color around to the back of the head. Connect your circle, then add a tie and two hanging sections. It may help to put the apple down and pick up again to get a better position for your piping hand.

Once all of your masks are finished, chill again in the fridge until hardened.

Lastly, melt 1/2 – 1 cup dark chocolate chips, (depending on how many turtles you are making). In my experience, adding oil is not necessary because dark chocolate chips seems to melt into a smoother consistency than white chocolate chips. Again, melt for approximately 1 minute, stirring at 20 second intervals.

TIP: Melt chocolate in a glass bowl as opposed to ceramic. Use a wooden spoon or plastic spatula as opposed to a metal spoon. The ceramic and metal conduct more heat, which ends up cooking the chocolate more than it should be, and could result in clumpy, useless chocolate.

Place your melted dark chocolate into a piping bag of your choice, and make eyes and mouths for each turtle. When I looked up the turtles, I saw the mouth that looked like an elongated figure eight as shown in the photo below.

I drew a mix of regular smiles and those elongated figure eight expressions on the turtles. They came out pretty cute, I thought. By the way, the orange melted chocolate on Michelangelo is the result of me accidentally adding too much oil to the white chocolate before I melted it. If you add too much oil, that is what will happen. I left him in there to show you, so that you make sure to get it right!

Lastly, insert your popsicle sticks to make them look like a caramel apple.

How fun is this serve at your theme party? Mostly apple, not too much sweet, and the perfect little extra for the party! You could even wrap these in cellophane and send them home as favors!
