The Very Hungry Caterpillar

August 4, 2012 by Amy Hudson

We all love the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
Take a morning and read the story with your child, then talk about all the foods the caterpillar ate, and perhaps talk about which of the foods he ate were nutritious and which were not.
Then, create him yourself!  Take a large strawberry and slice to create his head.  Next, create his eyes by using little bits of pineapple cut into circles and place sliced green jelly belly candies in front.  Form his body with green grapes , carrot feet, raisin mouth, and ham antennae.  He is walking on an oatmeal ground and taking in the cheddar cheese sun!

Mike Wazowski

July 23, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Do you recognize this guy from Monsters Inc.?  Mike Wazowski is made of a honeydew melon sliced and cored.  His eye is made of yogurt, sugar snap peas, and a blueberry.  His mouth is also made of bluberries.  I sliced him up in order to make the eating part easier for my little Disney fan.

After the photo, I sliced Mike all around for Grace to enjoy.

Giraffe

July 20, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Giraffes are one of the most beautiful and remarkable animals for kids to see.  I remember how excited was the first time we took Grace to the zoo.  She was in awe of the giant giraffes and wanted to spend lots of time watching them.  Today we are taking a cue from that experience and making a fruit giraffe!
This fruit giraffe is so tasty!   His body is a cantaloupe cut to shape, and his spots are sliced strawberries.  With his raisin eye he is checking things out!
I found it hard to shape it just right – but did my best.  My daughter, as usual, gobbled this fruit giraffe all up!  I’m thinking of making some different variations of this guy soon.
This snack would be great to make after a trip to the zoo!

Tropical Island

July 4, 2012 by Amy Hudson

This tropical island getaway is created by using oatmeal for the land/sand, yogurt for the waves, a graham cracker tree trunk, sugar snap peas for leaves, and colby jack cheese for a sun.
Makes me want a vacation!

Graduation Day

July 3, 2012 by Amy Hudson

For my daughter Grace’s preschool graduation day lunch, I used toast with blackberry jam to make a graduation cap.  A piece of string cheese cut in half lengthwise became the tassels and the diploma.  Diploma is tied with a slice of green onion (which Grace of course did not eat).  Watermelon on the side completed this lunch.

David and Goliath

July 1, 2012 by Amy Hudson

David and Goliath:  their bodies are made of celery.  David’s sling is made of ham with a grape half for a stone.  Their heads are made of Ritz crackers, raisin eyes, and carrots for mouths.  The Sun is made of a banana, and Goliath’s sword is made of a carrot.
Read the story of David and Goliath together (1 Samuel 17).  I love this Bible for preschool aged kids.
Create this lunch, and talk about how David must have felt going up against the giant.
Thank God for saving His people, the Israelites, through such a miraculous victory.  Enjoy!

Snowman

June 13, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Who’s ready for a fun winter edible craft?  Today we are making a cottage cheese snowman.  I can’t think of a better way to get the kids to eat cottage cheese than making it into a little snowman!
Snowman edible craft | Creative Kid Snacks

Ingredients:

1/2 – 3/4 cup cottage cheese
raisins (4-5)
1/2 a baby carrot
2 celery sticks
Scoop the cottage cheese onto the plate with a small spoon into three circles.  Slice your baby carrot in half and add for his nose.  Place his eyes and buttons on, and finish with arms.  Done!
This guy was one of the first creative snacks ever created.  You can’t get much healthier than this for a festive winter snack!

Variations:

Use pretzels for his arms to look more like sticks
Use yogurt for his body
Use blueberries for his buttons
