House

July 25, 2012 by Amy Hudson

To make this house, make a sandwich and slice to a square shape.  Create a roof out of celery, a door out of strawberry and a raisin doorknob.  The window and the chimney are made of carrot.  The chimney smoke is cottage cheese and the sidewalk is Triscuit crackers.  The little bush outside the house are little sugar snap peas.  Cheese finishes this scene up as the sun.

If you have a specifically colored home (like yellow), try to make your own home with cheese, or use celery to make a green house!  Our house is tan, so the sandwich worked for us!

Mike Wazowski

July 23, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Do you recognize this guy from Monsters Inc.?  Mike Wazowski is made of a honeydew melon sliced and cored.  His eye is made of yogurt, sugar snap peas, and a blueberry.  His mouth is also made of bluberries.  I sliced him up in order to make the eating part easier for my little Disney fan.

After the photo, I sliced Mike all around for Grace to enjoy.

Giraffe

July 20, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Giraffes are one of the most beautiful and remarkable animals for kids to see.  I remember how excited was the first time we took Grace to the zoo.  She was in awe of the giant giraffes and wanted to spend lots of time watching them.  Today we are taking a cue from that experience and making a fruit giraffe!
This fruit giraffe is so tasty!   His body is a cantaloupe cut to shape, and his spots are sliced strawberries.  With his raisin eye he is checking things out!
I found it hard to shape it just right – but did my best.  My daughter, as usual, gobbled this fruit giraffe all up!  I’m thinking of making some different variations of this guy soon.
This snack would be great to make after a trip to the zoo!
If your kids love animals, check out all of our animal snacks here!

Stopilght

July 16, 2012 by Amy Hudson

This lunch was inspired when, on the way home from the grocery store, my daughter, as is typical, asked what we could make for her creative lunch.
As we were driving at the time, I began to look around and decided that we could make a stoplight like the one I was approaching.  It was the perfect opportunity to reinforce the girls’ knowledge of what each light means, and why we have stoplights.
To create the post, cut a peanut butter sandwich into thin sections and arrange as shown above.  Next, cut a strawberry, a yellow pepper (banana would work too), and a green grape to similar sizes.  Create the street below by slicing some cheese into thin strips and arrange to form a street.

Egyptian Pyramids

July 11, 2012 by Amy Hudson

I recently bought a box of sesame crackers for the girls to use to dip into the fresh, homemade peach jam that our neighbor brought over the other day!  It’s a blessing to have such great neighbors!

I thought a great use of those sesame chips would be to create a pyramid.  So easy!
First, I pulled up this photo and taught the little one about pyramids:

Next, I created the lunch by using the crackers to build the pyramid, creating a dessert-looking ground using some leftover mexican lasagna (recipe – so good!), and adding an Egyptian sun by slicing the top off of a clementine orange and thinly slicing the section I removed into little rays.

Variations:
Ground: oatmeal, sliced cheese, anything that looks like the desert.
Pyramid blocks: chunks of bread, chunks of pineapple
Sun: slice of cheddar cheese cut to shape.

Volcano

July 8, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Volcanoes and lava have been of particular interest lately in our home.  My daughter can’t stop investigating how volcanoes work by watching Youtube videos featuring lava flows, volcanic explosions, and all thing volcano.
This volcano was made in honor of my daughter’s recent fascination with lava.   The volcano is a grilled cheese sandwich, the lava is ketchup (used for dipping) and the ground below is some rice leftover from last night’s dinner.
Simply cut your grilled cheese sandwich into a triangle, squeeze your ketchup to look like lava, and add something for the ground beneath the volcano.
Teach your children how volcanoes work by showing them this video:
Bill Nye the Science Guy Volcanoes

Variations:

Use celery for the ground beneath the volcano for a healthier option.

Hope you enjoy!

Jesus on the Cross

July 7, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Made on Good Friday, Jesus is made out of a baby carrot.  The main body lies flat because the carrot was sliced in half.  Jesus’ eyes are tiny bits of raisin, his crown of thorns – pretzels, and the cross is a peanut butter sandwich cut into the right shape.  The hill is made of banana.
Grace (age 4) actually asked me to make this one as we had talked all day that day about what Good Friday was about.  To her, this was not morbid or disturbing in any way; rather, it was a beautiful reminder of the amazing love that God had for us sending His son Jesus to die for us in this way.  It was the love of our savior in the form of our lunch.

Monkey

July 6, 2012 by Amy Hudson

To make this very easy monkey, simply cut a peanut butter sandwich into what looks like a pear and then add 2 half circle ears.  Layer a slice of turkey to create the facial area color, and add a red bell pepper mouth and 2 raisin eyes.  You could also use a thin strip of watermelon for the mouth if your child isn’t a big fan of bell peppers.

Mr. Peacock

July 5, 2012 by Amy Hudson

Mr. Peacock was so fun to make.  The best part is that you can make a colorful tail out of any colorful fruits or veggies you have on hand.  Mine has a body made from a peanut butter sandwich, legs and feet of carrot, and a tail made of celery, bananas, carrots, and blueberries.
